Carla Bley created an enormous body of work with emotional punch, intellectual reach and musical depth. Bley was a role model for independent musicians, founding her own label and studio in New York state in the 1970's. She passed away last year.
With her impish humor, madcap themes and minimalist approach of making more with less, Ms. Bley had an instantly recognizable sound, even as she drew on competing strains of swing, bebop, rock and polka, not to mention German cabaret music and the lean but lyrical style of composer Erik Satie.
Juneau jazz maestro Rob Cohen joins forces with SJF founder Yngvil Vatn Guttu in putting together this 8-piece tribute band especially for Spenard Jazz Fest 2024!
Lena Lukina will kick off the music indoors at 6:30 PM. Following her set, we will move to the Garden Stage for The Carla Bley Experience at 7:30 PM.
